WEEK 1
INTRODUCTION TO EXPANDED ART FORMS

Pierre Huyghe, One Million Kingdoms, 2001 - part of No Ghost Just a Shell, ongoing
Expanded Art Forms refers to the ever-growing world of art that has been, is being, and will be evolving away from the traditional idea of 'The Arts'. I see it as including, really, anything that appears to be a new use, combination, or conglomeration of the traditional. Personally, I think it should be called 'Expanding Art Forms' - as it is a potentially indefinite process, expanding into a potentially indefinite space.

While I wouldn't necessarily say it is a fact, however, it is observable how, historically, humans have developed ways to express how we perceive the world, and through these ways, we have learned the differing points of view that construct, unite, and divide cultures.
This is why art expands.
It has to continually grow and be different. As we develop new technologies and methods, we are able to do more to things that had previously required less, and the same goes for doing less to practices that required more. By doing so we are expanding the idea of art, adding new, creative ideas and methodologies.

This first week was a great introduction to the idea of expanded/ing art. We have been challenged to continually create artworks that bring together different mediums in interesting and new ways. As an audio enthusiast, I will probably be trying to make something that unites sound with other mediums.

Prior to this course, my main foray into digital arts has been through the power of instrumental music. I've been looking forward to discovering invigorating new ways to develop and expand on what I already know!
